The NZ Transport Agency is to work with the police, its contractors and civil defence to review its procedures for road closures along the Kaikoura Coast following the stranding of motorists on State Highway 1 north of Kaikoura at Easter.
Winter’s official arrival on Sunday (1 June) coincides with the Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend and the NZ Transport Agency is urging drivers in Auckland and Northland to plan ahead and take extra care during the break.
The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that the southbound lanes of State Highway 2 will be closed between Melling and Dowse Drive between 8pm and 4.30am tonight. Northbound drivers will not be affected.
Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway (SH16) eastbound will be closed each night between the Great North Road interchange and the Central Motorway Junction from 10pm to 5am the following morning starting tonight (Tuesday 27 May) until Friday (29 May).

Traffic was switched onto the new Paengaroa roundabout last week, as part of the Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL) project. Drivers travelling along State Highway 2 (SH2) and State Highway 33 (SH33) will have welcomed the improvement to their journey.
The NZ Transport Agency will be undertaking work over the next few days to replace the two passing lanes on State Highway 3 near Big Jim’s Garden Centre with wide shoulders and a wide centreline to improve safety for road users.
