The Rangitata River Bridge, SH1, is remaining closed today and likely overnight, as Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency teams work closely with Environment Canterbury river engineers to mend breaches in stopbanks ahead of more rain forecast for later this week.
Mid Canterbury’s Rakaia River Bridge, SH1, the longest road bridge in New Zealand at 1.7km long, is about to get some repairs. The repairs are needed because people drive into the sides from time to time.
Canterbury’s Upper Rangitata inland road, Route 72, linking Timaru and Ashburton reopened around midday today. It quickly filled with waiting traffic, with significant delays around the single lane Upper Orari Bridge and rural gridlock for several kilometres.
