Consultation is underway on a proposal to convert a range of temporary lower speed limits introduced on the Picton to Christchurch alternate state highway route after the November 2016 earthquake to permanent limits.

The NZ Transport Agency has closed State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura after reopening between 7 am and 10 am earlier today. Around 40 mm of rain has fallen this morning due to the tail of Cyclone Debbie, destabilising some areas.
After eight days of work by more than 100 people, State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura between Peketa and Goose Bay reopens Tuesday at 7 am. The road will close again Tuesday night at 6 pm, however people with urgent travel needs will be escorted through until 8 pm Tuesday only.
The NZ Transport Agency is advising people to drive to the conditions and check weather reports with very wet and windy weather forecast for much of the central North Island, and heavy rain for the top of the South Island for the coming days.
Motorists using State 16 between Westgate and Lincoln Road are being advised to expect lane changes in early April as work progresses as part of the Lincoln to Westgate Upgrade.
