The State Highway 1 (SH1) Tīrau to Waiouru accelerated maintenance project is the largest and most ambitious maintenance and renewal project to be undertaken in New Zealand. It started in September 2024 on SH1 in central and southern Waikato.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is asking people to ‘chip’ in by planning ahead, being patient and adhering to temporary speed limits, with multiple chip sealing sites planned for State Highway 1 from south of Whangārei to Kaiwaka throughout November.
Update 15 November: This weekend, an additional road closure will be needed to complete safety barrier repairs and paving on this stretch of State Highway 2.
Roading crews will be onsite over the coming weeks on State Highway 1, south of Hunterville and on State Highway 54 near Vinegar Hill, carrying out a range of maintenance work.
Wairarapa residents and drivers need to be ready for maintenance works and median barrier repairs on State Highway 2 between Masterton and Carterton next week.
Update 13 November: Repairs to an underslip on State Highway 60 Tākaka Hill are making great progress, with extra work able to be completed during the current maintenance closures on the route.
Road users should expect some delays tomorrow, Wednesday 13 November, when travelling through the State Highway 2 (SH2) and Ōmokoroa intersection, while overhead powerlines are moved to make way for the new roundabout.
