State Highway 36 (SH36) Mangorewa Gorge has had a facelift! If you’re travelling through the gorge on SH36/Tauranga Direct Road in the Bay of Plenty, be prepared to see changes says Sandra King, Bay of Plenty System Manager at NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA).
As people across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty head away for the first long weekend of the 2024/25 summer period, road workers will be laying down their tools to join them for a few well-deserved days of rest.
The first new coats of seal have been applied onto various sites across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty state highway network, as fine weather has allowed crews to get out on the roads.
State Highway 1 between Tīrau and Putāruru has re-opened on schedule today (Friday 4 October), following the successful completion of work to rebuild the road surface during a four week closure.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is advising that emergency road repairs are underway at the intersection of SH1 and SH29 in Piarere following heavy rain.
Over the past 2 weekends on State Highway 1 (SH1) near Cambridge, helicopters truly had the power, pulling transmission wires across SH1 as part of work on the National Grid. This meant the road had to be closed to keep everyone safe. It was a strange sight, seeing a normally very busy SH1 without any traffic.
Update 3pm: Due to incoming weather and other safety concerns SH2 will remain closed between Waiotahi Valley Back Road and Paerata Ridge for slip clearance tonight and throughout tomorrow, Tuesday 17 September.
The 2024/25 road renewal season has taken a significant step forward this week, with road rebuilding getting underway across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.
Update: Due to the overnight closure of SH36 Mangorewa Gorge for emergency works on Monday 16 September – this route is no longer a suitable detour for the SH29 Kaimai Range closure on that date.
Crews working in the Mangorewa Gorge have found a collapsed stormwater culvert under State Highway 36 (SH36) near the recent underslip work. As the culvert runs under the full width of the road it urgently needs to be replaced.
