Four months after Cyclone Gabrielle caused major devastation across the East Coast, the final connection on State Highway 35, north of Gisborne, will be restored next week with the opening of the Bailey bridge to replace the Hikuwai no. 1 bridge destroyed by the cyclone.
The next phase of the State Highway 1 Cambridge to Piarere Safety Improvements programme gets underway this month, as Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency starts construction of a turnaround bay at the intersection of SH1/Hydro Road, east of Cambridge.

Two lanes will initially be available during daytime hours only, with around-the-clock access expected to be restored from Saturday 10 June.
