As people gear up to make the most of the first long weekend in several months by hitting the road, headed for their favourite holiday spots, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is encouraging everyone to drive safe and plan ahead to avoid the busiest times on state highways across Auckland and Northland.

Over the past 2 weekends on State Highway 1 (SH1) near Cambridge, helicopters truly had the power, pulling transmission wires across SH1 as part of work on the National Grid. This meant the road had to be closed to keep everyone safe. It was a strange sight, seeing a normally very busy SH1 without any traffic.
The third stage of the huge maintenance project to improve State Highway 1 (SH1) in central and southern Waikato gets underway on Sunday night. From 7pm Sunday 29 September 2024, SH1 will be closed at nights between Piarere and just north of Tīrau (SH1/SH27 intersection).
