UPDATE: Due to bad weather, the Hawke’s Bay Expressway works could not be completed in the scheduled time. Because of this, there will be further closures from 9am to 3pm between Tuesday 8 June and Friday 11 June. Details are as follows:
Two days after the Ashburton River/ Hakatere Bridge was closed due a slump at one pier, the bridge has opened to more vehicles this morning, including 50MAX and high productivity permitted motor vehicles (HPMV), from 10.15 am.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will reopen the Porter’s Pass/ Arthur’s Pass route between Canterbury and the West Coast tonight at 8 pm. SH73 between Springfield and the Porter River Bridge has been closed since the weekend’s massive downpours damaged bridges and dumped scree over the highway.
With winter in full swing, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising people heading out of Wellington for the long Queen’s Birthday weekend to take extra care on the roads and plan ahead for a safe journey.
Changes will be taking place on State Highway 2 north of Sargent Road (Wainui Stream) and south of Wright Road (Whatakao Stream) from this week, as part of the Waihī to Ōmokoroa safety improvements project.
Persistent, hard rainfall over Canterbury has closed a number of state highways today. Others are being watched and may be closed if surface flooding continues and as night approaches with reduced visibility.
