Introduction

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency policy is that weight restrictions on roading facilities, where these are shown to be the best economic option, should be imposed and continued. Where the cost of renewal, reinstatement or structural upgrading of any roading facility is determined to be uneconomic, such works will not be eligible for funding assistance as a rule.

Waka Kotahi will continue to provide funding assistance for the cost-effective maintenance of the facility.

Options to be considered for bridge replacements on low volume roads

Approved organisations and Waka Kotahi (state highways) are expected to apply the decision tree shown in the Monetised benefits and costs manual (from August 2020) or in the simplified procedure SP2 in the Economic evaluation manual,(superseded August 2020) Decision chart for bridge replacements on low volume roads, to select the preferred (optimal) option for bridge replacements on low volume roads.
