Introduction

This work category provides for the construction/implementation of new or improved walking facilities.

Examples of qualifying activities

Examples of qualifying activities include, but may not be limited to:

  • new or improved footpaths, including on an existing bridge;
  • pedestrian crossing features, including kerb crossings, kerb protrusions, central refuges and pedestrian platforms;
  • pedestrian crossing controls, including zebra crossings, kea crossings and pedestrian traffic signals;
  • signage;
  • altering kerb lines to improve pedestrian access;
  • pedestrian shelters (excluding shelters that are primarily provided for waiting for, or getting to or from, passenger transport);
  • pedestrian overbridges/underpasses ;
  • pedestrian crossings of railways, and;
  • all markings, traffic signals, lighting, etc. necessary to bring the facility into service.

Other potential activities that are not in the above list should be discussed with the Transport Agency for eligibility.

Exclusions

To retain consistency shared walking and cycling facilities should be included in work category 452: Cycle facilities.

Applying for funding approval

Applications for funding approval of proposed projects should be made through the 'Improvement activity' module in Transport Investment Online(external link) (TIO). To be eligible for NLTF funding, any new activity must be added to the relevant Regional Land Transport Plan and to the NLTP.
