New temporary crossing and traffic lights on SH2 near Bayfair
From Thursday 3 September 2020, a new temporary signalised pedestrian crossing will be operational on both northbound and southbound lanes of State Highway 2 (SH2) Maunganui Road near Bayfair.
The new temporary crossing will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross all lanes of SH2 Maunganui Road safely in a single movement. The new crossing is required to enable construction of a new underpass and replaces the existing northbound crossing, introduced in February 2020.
The crossing is located between entrances three and four to the Bayfair Shopping Centre on the southbound side of SH2 Maunganui Road and along from Golf 360 on the northbound (Matapihi) side.
Once the crossing is operational, the existing underpass will close to allow for demolition to begin, clearing the way for construction of the new underpass.
Traffic controllers will be located at the new temporary crossing for two weeks to assist users with the new layout. Cyclists will be required to dismount prior to crossing for the safety of pedestrians.
The footpath on the northbound side will be extended to connect with the new temporary signalised crossing. A marked route through the Bayfair carpark and alongside the shopping centre will connect pedestrians using the crossing with Girven Road.
Traffic management signs will advise approaching motorists to slow down. A temporary 30km/h speed limit applies in this area for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and road workers.
The temporary crossing will be in place while work on the new Bayfair roundabout, underpass and flyover is underway.
Please follow all signage and take care while adjusting to the new layout.
