Purpose

Puketona Junction is located on the Twin Coast Discovery Route and has a poor safety record due to the high volume of turning traffic accessing the Bay of Islands via this intersection. Upgrading the intersection to a roundabout will improve safety and access by reducing road closures due to crashes and help build resilience across the Northland region, as the intersection is part of the detour route for State Highway 1.

The project is part of the Twin Coast Discovery Route SH1 Kawakawa to Puketona business case.

Construction of the roundabout commenced in July and is scheduled to be completed in April 2021.

Benefits

The intersection will be upgraded to a roundabout designed with a safe system approach. This means the upgrades will help to reduce the risk of death and serious injury at the intersection of State Highway 10 and State Highway 11.

Improved access and connectivity, combined with these safety benefits, will improve the user experience for those travelling the Twin Coast Discovery Route and on to the Bay of Islands. This includes visitors who use the Twin Coast Discovery Route, which will help to boost tourist activity in this region.

Procurement for construction of the project will occur via the Northland Delivery Framework (NDF), ensuring that local contractors benefit from job creation during construction. The NDF is a procurement model focused on growing employment in Northland and improving productivity.
