Petone to Grenada Link Road and the Cross Valley Link has been identified as one of the Roads of National Significance. The next steps will include undertaking investigations and considering options for this project.
State Highway 2 over the Remutaka Hill is the only direct road connecting Wellington/Hutt Valley to the Wairarapa and beyond. Keeping the Remutaka Hill, safe and open for the people who use it, involves ongoing maintenance work, and regular safety improvements.
When Transmission Gully opens it will become State Highway 1 (SH1). The former SH1 between Linden and Mackays Crossing will be renumbered State Highway 59 (SH59) in advance of Transmission Gully opening.

We want everyone who uses our roads to get home safely. To prevent people from being killed or seriously injured on our roads, we want to make SH2 between the Hutt Valley and Featherston safer. We are making physical safety improvements in this area and preparing to put safer speed limits in place.

Safety improvements on State Highway 57 (SH57) from the SH1 intersection to Heatherlea East Road include a new roundabout at the Queen St/SH57 intersection, edge barriers, and wider centrelines. Plus, a review of the speed limits on SH57 from SH1 to Shannon.
State Highway 58 runs between SH2 in the Hutt Valley and the Transmission Gully Interchange in Pauatahanui. This Crown-funded project is a Road of Regional Significance and aims to improve safety and reliability of the route.
Traffic volumes on State Highway 59 and State Highway 58 between Paremata and Pāuatahanui have changed since Transmission Gully Motorway - Te Aranui o Te Rangihaeata opened. Waka Kotahi is looking at the function of these roads and what each corridor could look like in future.
