Te Hana to Port Marsden (including a Brynderwyn Hills alternative) is stage 2 of the Northland Corridor, 1 of the 3 Roads of National Significance (RoNS) that will improve connections from Auckland to Whangārei. The Northland Corridor will support economic growth and productivity, reduce congestion, improve safety, support housing development, and provide a more resilient roading network.
Stretching from Warkworth to Whangārei, the road will address the critical resilience and safety issues facing the current road. Northland has one of the worst safety records in the country and SH1 over the Brynderwyn Hills was closed in both directions last year for 36 days and closed southbound only for 37 days – totalling 73 days.
Property impacts and a route has not been established for the Te Hana to Port Marsden stage, although we will be taking into account work already done in the corridor over previous years.

March – Minister of Transport announces plans to ‘4-lane’ the State highway between Whangārei and Port Marsden Highway April – Investigations commence on the Whangārei to Port Marsden Highway 4-laning project, as well as the Port Marsden Highway to Te Hana long term improvements. August – Short list options for the 4-laning between Whangārei to Port Marsden Highway as well options for a Brynderwyn Hills bypass are presented for public feedback. July – Whangārei to Te Hana is identified as one of 12 state highway projects nationwide to be re-evaluated to align with the new priorities and strategic direction set out in the 2018 Government Policy Statement (GPS) on land transport. October – Re-evaluation of Whangārei to Te Hana is complete. The re-evaluation concluded that there remains a strong case for addressing safety and resilience on this section of SH1.
