There will be ongoing northbound and southbound lane closures, day and night along Transmission Gully. These will be ongoing until February, except for the holiday period, between Friday 19 December and Monday 5 January.
There will be no further weekend closures in December, and Transmission Gully will be open with lane closures in place in both the north and southbound direction. Pavement reconstruction works are happening in the southbound lanes just north of SH58. Drainage works is now complete at all sites in the southbound lanes. There will be other minor works happening this week.
There will be no roadworks happening on SH1 Transmission Gully through the Christmas holiday period, and all lanes will be open as normal.
On Monday 5 January, there will be a northbound road closure between 9pm – 4.30am. All traffic will detour via SH59 as per the detour map below. This is for drainage works.
Tuesday 6 January – mid January, there will be both southbound and northbound road closures between 9pm – 4.30am. All traffic will detour via SH59, or SH59 and SH58 as per the detour maps below.
Chip-seal resurfacing works will be happening in the southbound lanes until approximately mid-January, weather permitting. Chip-seal is a process where bitumen is applied to the road surface, and then loose stone chip is laid on top. The two need time to bond together, so a temporary speed limit of 30km/h will be in place at all times when the road is open. It’s really important to stick to the speed as loose chip may fly and damage vehicles.
There will be ongoing lane closures, in both directions, throughout the summer maintenance period. Expect congestion, particularly at peak times.
From Monday 5 January – Sunday 10 January, Metlink bus replacements are happening between Porirua and Waikanae, and buses will be using SH59.
NZTA contractors are making drainage improvements and pavement reconstruction for approximately 6km of the 27km highway this summer. This work is needed to repair areas of the road that have been significantly impacted by water seeping into the pavement.
Additionally, there will be approximately 18km of routine chip-sealing maintenance work undertaken over the summer. Chip-sealing will help to waterproof the road surface ahead of the winter months in 2026.
See the work sites map below for an overview of the works.
