Project introduction

The NZ Transport Agency is seeking public input into proposals to set permanent new speed limits on State Highway 1 through Balclutha.

  • Project type

    Speed review

Post-consultation stage

To make the most informed decision, we carefully considered the information we received through the submissions from the consultation. Changing speed limits is a legal process and takes time with numerous steps we had to carefully followed once after completing our analysis.

Speed review process

What we know

Vehicle numbers on this section of highway are increasing and will accelerate further as the industrial park expands. Extra traffic is also being generated by more residential developments in this area. Sections of the highway are undulating with curves making it hard for traffic on side roads to judge the speeds approaching highway traffic.

Between 2009 and 2018 there were six crashes on this section of highway.

What we’re proposing

Based on what we’ve learnt, we are proposing extending the current 80km/h speed limit zone further south, so it ends just past the Rosebank industrial park.

Location Current speed limit (km/h) Proposed speed limit (km/h)
Extending the existing 80 km/h speed limit from where it currently ends near McKay Road, 450m further south to just past the Rosebank industrial park. 100 80
