Key project features

The NZ Transport Agency has awarded the contract to Cambridge Construction Company which expects the job to take up to 20 weeks from a mid-September start-date.

With homes, businesses and schools all nearby, our goal is to get the job done with the least disruption possible so extensive traffic management will be needed.

Around 37,000 vehicles pass through the intersection each day, and this project will make a difference to all those road users – including cyclists and pedestrians.

What are we building?

The current Hillcrest roundabout will be enlarged and have three entry lanes for city-bound SH1 traffic and a slip lane for vehicles heading on to SH26 (Morrinsville Road). The Transport Agency investigated all possible improvements for the intersection, including traffic lights.

This is the city’s busiest intersection and even when the Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway opens in 2020 it will remain the main southern entrance and exit for Hamilton. Current peak-hour traffic volumes are around 3600 vehicles per hour (vph), and forecast to rise to 4100vph in 2021 and 4300vph in 2041.

Construction will start in mid-September. With homes, businesses, schools and other organisations all nearby, our goal is to get the job done with the least disruption possible. Extensive traffic management will be required during the four-month construction period.

What else is happening along SH1-Cobham Drive?

The Transport Agency and Hamilton City Council are looking at a One Network solution to SH1 between Howell Ave and Grey St.

Wairere Drive intersection: Hamilton City Council is to complete Wairere Drive Extension and connect it to Cobham Drive with a roundabout. Work starts this year and will be completed by mid-2016.

Cambridge Road intersection: A signalised intersection is planned but there is no timeframe.

Sillary Street pedestrian underpass:  Design work is under way.
