About the project

The SH1 Whangārei to Wellsford safety improvement- Northern section has delivered safety inventions along a 12.2km stretch of SH1 from Springfield Road, Whangārei, to the Port Marsden Highway (SH15) roundabout. These improvements have reduced the percentage of people killed and seriously injured on this section of road by 88 % in the four and a half years after these safety improvements have been installed, compared to the five year period prior to the changes being made.

What safety improvements have been used?

Rumble strips

These are raised markings which make a sound when driven over, giving people a warning if they stray across their lane.

Wider centre lines

A widened centre line  accommodates the flexible safety posts means more space between you and oncoming vehicles. It is a simple and effective way to steer drivers away from each other. A wider centre line can give drivers more time to react and can help prevent a crash if someone makes a mistake.
