Whakatiki Street to Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt

We’re making some safety improvements to State Highway 2 between the Whakatiki Street and Fergusson Drive intersections in Upper Hutt.

This project consists of the extension of median barriers along four kilometres of the state highway.

Parts of the road shoulder will need to be widened to accommodate the new median barriers. There will also be some changes to the road layout in localised areas, and roadside barriers will be extended at the Totara Park Road intersection.

As the project progresses, we’ll be working to make this section of SH2 safer for all road users. We’ll continue to keep you informed as we move forward.

Work on the go

At the moment the project has been paused as we finalise the design for the third and final section between Totara Park Road to Fergusson Drive.

This does include further work on how the design interacts with the stop bank at the northern end of the project but will mean we can accommodate the new road layout better, while maintaining a sufficient shoulder.

Work completed

  • 1.5km kilometres of median barriers installed between Whakatiki and Gibbons Streets.
  • Around 300 metres of additional side barriers around the intersections.
  • 1km kilometres of median barriers installed between Gibbons Street and Totara Park Road.

Completed installation of median barriers on State Highway 2, Upper Hutt.
