Cambridge Road, Bethlehem/Tauriko

The future state of Cambridge Road, Bethlehem / Tauriko is beginning to take shape as work progresses on the Takitimu North Link project. This area of the site is very busy with several changes to the existing Cambridge / Moffat Road intersection underway, to make way for the expressway to be built, as well as a safer road layout in this busy area of Tauranga.

Around 14,000 vehicles use Cambridge / Moffat roads each day, demonstrating why this is a key area of the project – as well as one of the most complex with several pieces of the puzzle to this build.

A major structure – a 100m bridge – is being built in 2023. This will become the new alignment for Cambridge Road and is around five metres lower than the existing road. While this takes place work to relocate Harrison Road (100m south), and Cambridge Road East (30m north) is also underway. Shifting these roads makes way for the four-lane expressway, and will result in a safer Cambridge Road East intersection, with a better line of sight.

Cambridge Road – next steps for major works

Construction of the new road layout and the overbridge will be completed in three phases. While these works take place there will be slower speed limits in place, shoulder closures and when necessary, stop/go traffic management.

From January 2024 until April 2024 major works will require a full closure of a section of Moffat Road, Bethlehem. This will be a significant disruption to travel through this area with local alternative routes for light vehicles and heavy trucks to use State Highway 29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road.

Careful consideration has gone into recommended alternative routes for both light and heavy vehicles during the closure of a section of Moffat Road. Safety is our primary concern, especially for the residents in the affected area. There are pedestrians and cyclists, some of whom are children, as well as residents’ cars and other vehicles in this area. Increased volumes of traffic poses a significant risk to their safety.

For this reason, we encourage people to take the recommended routes as outlined in the map, not short cuts, and plan for additional travel time.

Over four days in March 2023, 21 beams were placed for the Cambridge Road Overbridge, this involved some very impressive reversing by members of our crew! The alignment for the new four-lane road will pass underneath the beams seen in the photograph, which show the level of the new Cambridge Road alignment (approximately 5 metres lower than existing road), and the new expressway will then run a further 18 metres underneath, demonstrating the significant programme of earthworks at this section of the project.
