Purpose

The SH16 Lincoln to Westgate project will improve this section of Northwestern Motorway and will tie into work recently completed at the Lincoln Road Interchange. The motorway will be widened between Lincoln Road and Westgate with additional traffic lanes, better on and off-ramps, and a bus shoulder lane in both directions. Bridges over the motorway will be replaced at Royal Road, Huruhuru Road and at Huruhuru Creek (westbound only). The Northwestern Cycleway will be extended alongside the motorway to create a shared walking and cycling path. This project is part of the Western Ring Route which once completed, will provide an alternative to SH1, central Auckland and the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Benefits

  • Additional motorway lanes to help manage traffic and provide more reliable travel times for motorists
  • A dedicated bus shoulder lane on the motorway to improve bus travel times
  • Replacing the bridges at Royal Road, Huruhuru Road and Huruhuru Creek to improve safety and access, and provide better walking and cycling facilities
  • Improving the Royal Road interchange to provide better and safer access onto and off the motorway
  • Extending the Northwestern Cycleway from Lincoln Road to Westgate bridge
