The Waihoehoe Road upgrade is being delivered through the Government’s New Zealand Upgrade Programme investment and will provide more transport choices, connect people to Drury Railway Station, and support the development of additional housing.
Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city - home to about a third of the nation’s population - and continues to be the country’s fastest-growing region.
The southern growth area makes up the largest proportion of future growth areas in Auckland – roughly 45%.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, Mana Whenua, Auckland Transport and KiwiRail are working together to plan and deliver road and rail improvements in South Auckland.
In Drury, we are getting on with preparation to upgrade part of Waihoehoe Road under the New Zealand Upgrade Programme. The Government has approved pre-implementation funding to allow design work to progress.
The project will provide good options for connecting by foot, bike or bus to the planned Drury Railway Station, as well as new housing developments.
To get ahead of future demand for travel generated by the new rail stations and housing, the timeline for this project has been brought forward earlier than previously communicated under the Te Tupu Ngātahi Supporting Growth process to designate land for transport improvements
The Waihoehoe Road upgrade project is located between the intersections of Waihoehoe Rd/Great South Road and Waihoehoe Road/Kath Henry Lane. The improvements will provide access to the planned Drury East housing development area and Drury Railway Station.
Other road and rail projects being progressed in South Auckland include the SH22 Drury upgrade, SH1 Papakura to Drury improvements, three new rail stations between Papakura and Pukekohe, rail electrification between Papakura and Pukekohe, and the Wiri to Quay Park rail project, which includes building a third main line between Westfield and Wiri junctions.
