We’ve now completed a range of works to make old State Highway 1 (SH1) between Mackays Crossing and Peka Peka fit-for-purpose as a local road. Details of the works which took place in ten different zones are outlined below.

Zone 1 – Poplar Avenue to Raumati Road

In this area, we’ve:

  • provided a standard 1.5m wide footpath from Rongomau Lane footbridge to Ihakara Street
  • installed new kerb and channel and drainage infrastructure
  • installed new lighting and signage for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists
  • upgraded the street lighting including outreach arms and lanterns
  • built new residential vehicle crossings where driveways meet the new footpath.

Zone 2 – Raumati Road to Ihakara Street

In this area, we’ve:

  • provided a standard 1.5m wide footpath from Rongomau Lane footbridge to Ihakara Street
  • provided a roundabout at the Raumati Road/old SH1 intersection
  • constructed new residential vehicle crossings where driveways meet the new footpath
  • installed new lighting and signage along the corridor for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists
  • installed new kerb and channel and drainage infrastructure.

Zone 3 – Ihakara Street to Kāpiti Road

In this area, we’ve:

  • provided new traffic signals at the Ihakara Street/old SH1 intersection
  • provided a shared path from Ihakara Street to the main Coastlands entrance
  • provided raised pedestrian-only controlled signals at the railway station crossing point
  • constructed new residential vehicle crossings where driveways meet the new footpath.

The town centre upgrade works around the train station were separate to the project and undertaken by the Kāpiti Coast District Council.

Zone 4 – Kāpiti Road to Ventnor Drive

Changes to this area will include:

  • re-configuring the road markings to cater for a painted median and a single traffic lane in each direction
  • re-configuring the lanes at the Kāpiti Road signalised intersection to suit traffic movements, volumes and on-road cycle lanes
  • repainting existing line markings.

These works will be completed at a later date by Kāpiti Coast District Council, as water mains infrastructure in this zone needs to be upgraded first.

Zone 5 – Ventnor Drive to Otaihanga Roundabout

In this area, we’ve:

  • repainted all existing line markings
  • carried out sealing repairs and vegetation clearing.

Zone 6 – Otaihanga Roundabout to Waikanae Bridge

In this area, we’ve:

  • retained two lanes at the Otaihanga roundabout
  • reconfigured the road layout to enable on-road cycle lanes to Waikanae Bridge to be provided
  • extended the shared path from Kebbell Drive to the Waikanae Bridge including a pedestrian refuge and cycle crossing point.

Zone 7 – Waikanae Bridge to Te Moana Road

In this area, we’ve:

  • constructed a shared path on the western side of old SH1 from Waikanae Bridge to Te Moana Road
  • provided for on-road cycle lanes
  • constructed new residential vehicle crossings where driveways meet the new footpath.

Zone 8A – Te Moana Road to Martin Street

In this area, we’ve:

  • provided a new road layout to suit traffic movements and lower traffic volumes since the expressway opened, particularly between Te Moana Road and Ngaio Road to improve east-west connectivity
  • constructed new traffic signals at the Ngaio Road/old SH1 intersection to improve safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, as well as enhance connectivity
  • provided a dedicated left turn lane from old SH1 into Ngaio Road
  • retained the free turn from Te Moana Road heading north onto old SH1.

Zone 8B–10 – North of Waikanae to Peka Peka

In this area, we've:

  • put in cycle lanes on each side of the road
  • removed the passing lanes, so there is now a single lane in each direction
  • widened the road shoulders and realigned the lane-markings to accommodate the cycle lanes.
