[Narrator] This is AA District Council member Jenny. |
00:00:06 |
[Jenny] I’m a Wellingtonian and I go up to the Kāpiti Coast all the time |
00:00:09 |
particularly in the weekends. |
00:00:10 |
It’s a terrible drive up there because there’s always traffic. |
00:00:13 |
And sometimes you can be held up for hours. |
00:00:15 |
[Narrator] But soon, when Jenny needs to get north, |
00:00:17 |
she'll simply get on the Transmission Gully motorway at Linden. |
00:00:21 |
[Jenny] Ooh, how exciting! |
00:00:23 |
[Narrator] Jenny’s volunteered to give us her point of view |
00:00:25 |
of what it’s like driving Transmission Gully. |
00:00:28 |
[Jenny] So it's certainly going to build Wellington’s resilience. |
00:00:31 |
Gosh it’s a side of Wellington you don’t get to see isn't it, |
00:00:34 |
Hidden away in the middle of the hills. |
00:00:37 |
So we’re coming up to a bridge here. |
00:00:39 |
Must be, Cannons Creek |
00:00:42 |
surrounded by massive pylons. |
00:00:46 |
[Narrator] The bridge over Cannons Creek, Te Ara a Toa, |
00:00:48 |
is 230 metres long and 60 metres high |
00:00:52 |
[Jenny] And the backdrop there is Porirua. |
00:00:56 |
[Narrator] The award winning bridge is built to withstand |
00:00:59 |
a one in two and a half thousand year earthquake. |
00:01:02 |
It’s just one of the many ways Transmission Gully will be a very safe road. |
00:01:06 |
[Jenny] So, how many kilometres is the road altogether? |
00:01:09 |
[Guide] It's 27 kilometres. |
00:01:11 |
[Jenny] It'll be a fairly short journey really, won't it. |
00:01:13 |
[Narrator] At 100km/h it will take around 17 minutes |
00:01:16 |
for Jenny to travel from Linden to Paekākāriki. |
00:01:19 |
[Jenny] Look, I think going out of Wellington |
00:01:22 |
you’re going to have a lot more happy motorists |
00:01:24 |
This is lovely isn’t it, this outlook here, just big wide road. |
00:01:29 |
You do feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere don’t you. |
00:01:31 |
Like this, where am I? |
00:01:33 |
[Narrator] Jenny is actually driving past the Waitangirua Interchange. |
00:01:37 |
The interchange connects with the Whitby and Waitangirua communities. |
00:01:41 |
[Jenny] It’s going to make a big difference for residents there |
00:01:43 |
getting onto the motorway. |
00:01:45 |
So we’re going downhill now, very slight bend. |
00:01:48 |
[Narrator] After the Waitangirua Interchange, Jenny passes the interchange |
00:01:52 |
for State Highway 58, leading to the Hutt Valley. |
00:01:55 |
[Jenny] I feel like I’ve got my bearings a little bit here. |
00:01:58 |
[Narrator] If motorists like Jenny run into any trouble on the motorway |
00:02:01 |
and need to stop, her car will be picked up by a radar. |
00:02:05 |
A recovery vehicle will immediately be dispatched to assist. |
00:02:09 |
It’s the first radar system of its kind in New Zealand. |
00:02:12 |
[Jenny] These beautiful green hills in front of us. |
00:02:17 |
There’s just more and more pressure on roads and public transport |
00:02:21 |
so to have something like this that just makes everything quicker |
00:02:25 |
and easier and safer is just going to be tremendous for Wellington. |
00:02:29 |
[Narrator] The steepest part of the motorway is up and over the summit |
00:02:32 |
Pouāwha, the Wainui Saddle. |
00:02:34 |
[Jenny] This is amazing isn't it, the amount of work that's gone into here. |
00:02:38 |
Well look at that, hello Kāpiti! |
00:02:42 |
Soon Jenny will be able to carry on north |
00:02:44 |
as Transmission Gully seamlessly becomes the Kāpiti Expressway. |
00:02:48 |
[Jenny] You know the biggest thing for me? |
00:02:50 |
I think I’m going to be smiling when I come out of Wellington |
00:02:53 |
because I haven’t been frustrated with all the traffic. |
00:02:56 |
I think its going to be great. |
