The Motor Vehicle Register records information about vehicles used on New Zealand roads and the persons responsible for their use. The primary purposes of the Motor Vehicle Register are:

maintenance of the security of New Zealand

collection of charges imposed or authorised by an act

The open data portal provides a point-in-time ‘snapshot’ of all vehicles currently registered in New Zealand. Vehicle fleet data files can also be downloaded individually by year, refer to 'New Zealand vehicle fleet open data sets'.

Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Exhaust Emissions 2007

This rule applies to motor vehicles that are required to be certified for entry into, or operation in, service. It is aimed at achieving improvements in air quality by reducing the levels of harmful emissions from motor vehicles.

Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Repair 1998
