The composition of the vehicle fleet has a significant influence on emissions and subsequent impacts from the state highway network. The emissions performance of individual vehicles depends on type and quality of fuel they use, the exhaust emissions standard they were built to and how well they are maintained once in service. Statistics on the vehicle fleet are reported regularly by the Ministry of Transport, whilst fuel quality and emissions standards are regulated by a number of agencies.
