NZTA has opened a new speed review on the 0.65km section of State Highway 26 from the State Highway 1C/26 roundabout to northeast of Berkley Avenue near Te Ara Hou Village (where the current speed signs are).
The speed limit was lowered in December 2021 to 50km/h. A new requirement under the Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2024 means this speed limit should now change to 60km/h by 1 July 2025. We are, however, conducting a speed review that will take into consideration safety, technical, cost benefit and other data, alongside community feedback to determine if we set the speed limit to 50km/h.
Hamilton City Council will become responsible for this road in the future when it is revoked from being a state highway to a local road. Changes as part of the revocation process are being delivered by the Council including the construction of an intersection upgrade at the current SH26, Silverdale Road and Matangi Road and this has been designed for lower speeds.

$1,000 approximately if existing signage can be used* |
*If this wasn’t the case and new signage was required along with the associated traffic management, we expect the costs would be approximately $160,000. Implementation costs may include such things as planning, road signs and markings, installation costs, overheads, and consultation and administration costs.
This proposal aligns with the Government’s Road Safety Objectives which include taking a balanced and targeted approach to speed limits by considering safety, economic impacts – including travel times – and community views.
