How we talk about road safety

Everyone in New Zealand has a part to play in supporting Road to Zero, New Zealand’s road safety strategy. That’s why we’re making resources available to support your road safety conversations and storytelling.

This page will be updated as we refresh key messages and create new resources so make sure to check back here to get the most up-to-date information.

Key messages

We have key messages to help you when writing or talking about road safety. These key messages cover Road to Zero, Vision Zero and Safe System.

Below are the three key ideas we are communicating in our road safety work:

  • Vision Zero: Our vision is an Aotearoa where no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads.
  • Road to Zero: Road to Zero sets us on a path to achieve Vision Zero, a New Zealand where no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads.
  • Safe System: If we are to achieve Vision Zero, we need to create a safe transport system; one that recognises humans make mistakes and is designed so that these mistakes do not need to cost us our lives.

Road to Zero image bank

We have a Road to Zero specific image bank full of images that can be used by people and organisations working in road safety in Aotearoa New Zealand. Images showcase the vision of a New Zealand where no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads.

The image bank is hosted on Uview. To sign up, simply fill in the form and follow the steps to verify your email address. Once accepted, you will be able to log in via the same link and request any images that you would like to use for road safety related projects.

The relationship between Vision Zero, Road to Zero, and Safe System

Together Vision Zero, Road to Zero, and Safe System make up the why, what and how of our approach to road safety in New Zealand. Here’s a short explainer video that can be shared with others to learn more about how these concepts fit together.

Graphics

Ready-made graphics are available to help you tell a Road to Zero story in presentations and reports. Graphics include Road to Zero on a page, the Safe System principles, Vision Zero, and the what, why, how of the transport system as pictured below.
