The Safety Boost Programme makes regional state highways safer through a range of low-cost high-benefit safety improvements.
Work on the first phase of Boost improvements began in February 2018. The programme upgraded 30 regional state highways in Northland, Taranaki, Manawatu-Wanganui, Otago and Southland with rumble strips and better signs. Safety barriers were added on high-risk sections.
The first phase of Boost improvements also installed intersection speed zones (also known as rural intersection activated warning signs or RIAWS) at ten high-risk intersections on state highways in Northland, Waikato, Canterbury and Central Otago.
In January 2019, the Associate Transport Minister announced an extension to the Safety Boost Programme to eleven more regional state highways across Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay, Manawatū-Whanganui and the West Coast. Safety improvements included things like widening road shoulders and installing roadside safety barriers in high-risk locations, putting in rumble strips along the side and centre of the road, and improving signage.
Extension of the Safety Boost Programme – 2021
In 2021 further Boost Programme funding will enable safety improvements such as rumble strips, better roadside signs and line markings to be installed in high-risk locations.
The programme has identified sites all over the country, consisting of intersections and corridors that would benefit from the simple but effective safety improvements.
The following sites will be upgraded in 2021 with further sites and intersections to be announced as funding is confirmed:
- SH25 Waitakaruru to Kōpū
- SH2 Mackaytown to Waikino
- SH27–SH26 Tatuanui to Waharoa
- SH29 Matamata–Piako Boundary to SH28
- Sh5 Webster Road to Waiohotu Road
- Sh5 Waiohotu Road to Ōtūroa Road

While traffic volumes are lower on these roads, the risks for people travelling on them are real and many deaths and serious injuries can be avoided by making some relatively simple, but effective, improvements. For example, rumble strips can reduce all crashes by around 25 percent and fatal run-off-road crashes by up to 42 percent.
The Safety Boost Programme is part of the Safe Network Programme – a collaborative, prioritised programme of proven safety improvements on high risk routes across New Zealand.
