Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is currently developing a National Speed Limit Register (NSLR), which will provide an online maps-based central source of speed limits for roads in New Zealand.

Speed limits, and communication of those limits to road users, is core to road safety. Speed limit data is used by the public, enforcers and increasingly by intelligent systems in vehicles. The National Speed Limit Register will make it easier for people to access and utilise that data. Third party consumers will be able to easily access consistent speed limit data from one electronic source.

The register will enable organisations responsible for speed management to more easily comply with the Setting of Speed Limit Rule 2017 and Speed Management Guide, and record, update and share speed limit data, and make more informed speed management decisions.

Development of this national register contributes to the Waka Kotahi Speed management programme and the Tackling Unsafe Speeds programme released by the Ministry of Transport.
