This calculator helps estimate your road user charges for your vehicle.

Anyone using New Zealand’s roads helps pay for their maintenance. Most road users pay levies in the prices of their fuel.  Road users with a diesel vehicle, or a vehicle that weighs more than 3.5 tonnes, pay this levy through road user charges (RUC).

Road user charges (RUC)

Information you need

Before you can use this calculator, you need to know your vehicle type and its 'RUC weight'. RUC weight is the lesser of the:

  • gross vehicle mass for the RUC vehicle, or
  • maximum allowable mass for the RUC weight under section 4, Part 1 of the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Dimensions and Mass 2016 (VDAM Rule 2016).

Section 4, Part 1 of the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Dimensions and Mass 2016

All amounts shown in this calculator include GST, but exclude administration fees that you pay when buying a RUC licence.

Standard distance licences

For the standard distance licences below, select your vehicles' RUC types and RUC weights using the drop-down boxes provided.

Additional licence (based on RUC Types chosen above)

An additional licence must cover the weight between the RUC vehicle's maximum allowable mass under section 4.5(1) of Part 1 of the VDAM Rule 2002, and the maximum mass specified in the permit under which the RUC vehicle is operating. This option is likely to suit vehicles generally used within standard distance licence weight limits, but occasionally used to carry overweight loads.

H Licences

An “H vehicle” licence allows a vehicle to carry weights up to the maximum weight of the vehicle's overweight permit at all times. This option is likely to suit vehicles being used to regularly carry overweight loads.
