If you've bought too much RUC and don't want to buy an overlap licence, you can apply to surrender your RUC licence and get a refund instead.

Warning

If your refund is approved, your RUC licence will no longer be valid and you must destroy it. If we later find that the RUC licence label is still in use, we'll issue an invoice to recover the refunded amount.

Why are you surrendering your RUC licence?

You can't surrender your RUC licence and apply for a refund because you're selling the vehicle. 

The RUC licence must stay with the vehicle when you sell it.

RUC licence details

Is your RUC licence more than two years old?
Hint: there's an issue date in the bottom right corner of the licence label.

You can't surrender your RUC licence and apply for a refund if it's more than two years old. 

This is set out in section 35(2) of the Road User Charges Act 2012.

Instead, you'll need to buy a new RUC licence online and enter your current odometer/hubodometer reading to 'overlap' your current licence.

Are you surrendering the whole licence or just part of the licence?

As soon as your refund has been approved, you'll need to buy a new RUC licence that starts from the odometer or hubodometer reading you enter below. We'll let you know when your refund has been approved.

If you don't give us proof of the bank account, we won't be able to pay your refund. Your refund will be delayed while we contact you for evidence of the bank details. 

Do you want us to save the bank account details for any future refunds?
We can only save the bank account details if they are in the same name as the person or company registered for this vehicle.
