General design

All surfaces on which pedestrians walk should be firm, stable and slip resistant even when wet. Changes in height due to tree roots, uneven pavers and surface types can be minimised.

Materials

Paths can be surfaced with a range of materials. Considerations include safety, comfort, maintenance and attractiveness.

Grates and covers

Whenever possible, covers and grates should be sited within the street furniture zone. If this is not possible, they can be placed at the edge of the footpath through zone.
