Designing an environment for pedestrians should take a safe system approach of harm minimisation and meet universal design principles to ensure they meet the needs of all people.

Section 3.1 includes:

  • Safe System design
    The design of places for pedestrians should align with Safe System principles.
  • Universal design principles
    Universal design is the design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability.
  • Designing for blind and low vision people
    There are two main features that assist people who are blind or have low vision on their walking journeys, tactile ground surface indicators and audible tactile traffic signals.
  • Designing for mobility scooters
    An increasing number of people are using mobility scooters to get around our urban areas. There are horizontal geometric considerations that ensure a facility is designed for mobility scooters.
