UPDATE: State Highway 6 closed near Wakefield following crash (SH6 NOW FULLY OPEN)

UPDATE 5:05 pm:

The damaged power pole and lines at the crash scene have been repaired and State Highway 6 is now fully open in both directions.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi wants to thank drivers for their cooperation and patience while contractors worked hard to repair the damaged powerlines and reopen the highway today.


Update 9:55 am:

State Highway 6 now has  one lane open with stop/go traffic control and a 30 km/h temporary speed limit in place at the crash site. 

Drivers can expect delays when travelling through the area and should allow extra time for their journey. 

Road users must follow the instructions of emergency service and contractors at the crash site and follow all traffic management instructions and temporary speed limits. They are in place to keep drivers and contractors safe.

Drivers heading south from Nelson will have to use local toad detours following a crash on State Highway 6 near Wakefield this morning.

The incident, reported just after seven o’clock this morning, occurred near Baigent Valley Road.

A car has collided with a power pole, and State Highway 6 is closed while emergency services attend the crash scene.

Local road detours are available via 88 Valley Road.

Southbound traffic should turn left onto 88 Valley Road, right onto Wai-iti Valley Road and left to rejoin State Highway. The reverse applies to northbound traffic.
