Upper Clutha speed limit reductions

Drivers will need to watch for new permanent lower speed limits that take effect from Friday 18 December on sections of the state highway in Luggate and near Wanaka.

The local community asked the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) to carry out a speed limit review on these sections of highway. A rigorous process for the Setting of Speed Limits was followed to confirm the appropriate action and as a result the current 80km/h speed limit on state highway 84 in the Wanaka area will be extended from near Puzzling World to 400m past the Mount Iron intersection toward Albert Town and Cromwell.

The current 70km/h speed limit through the centre of Luggate near the camping ground and Hotel drops to 50km/h.

NZTA Otago-Southland State Highways Manager Niclas Johansson says the changes were driven by safety concerns the local community had raised about the increase in traffic in these areas.

Mr Johansson says the lower speed limits will provide improved safety in areas that are becoming increasingly busy especially for people using the state highway 6 turn off to Albert Town.

The NZ Police supports the safety initiative and will be monitoring the area after the speed limit takes effect.
