Purpose

To remove most of the through-traffic from residential section of SH36 Pyes Pa Road, providing a safer environment for residents and a more efficient route for through-traffic.

Benefits

Motorists on SH36 will have a less congested, more direct route into the city via the tolled section of Takitimu Drive (Route K). People living in the residential section of Pyes Pa Road will have a safer local road access their property, rather than the busier state highway.

About the project

This project is a partnership between the NZ Transport Agency, Tauranga City Council and Grasshopper Developments.

Pyes Pa Bypass includes 4.2km of new road (from where the SH29 (to Hamilton) roundabout intersects with the tolled section of Takitimu Drive (Route K) to SH36 near the crematorium) where a new roundabout will be built.

When the bypass is complete, the residential section of SH36 will revert to Tauranga City Council’s control and become a local road.

Project update, April 2010

The detailed design and a lot of the earthworks, including preloading of the swampy soils to form a solid foundation for the road construction, and construction of the embankments along the route have already been completed.

The surfacing of the road began in February 2010 and will continue until April (the end of the construction season). Construction on the road restarts in September, when work on the new roundabout also begins.

All work halts again for three weeks over Christmas to minimise disruptions to holiday travellers.

The roundabout near the crematorium is due to be finished in January 2011. Depending on weather conditions, the road surfacing is due to be finished by July 2011 when the bypass will be opened to traffic.
