Rail safety action taken

When we identify safety risks and issues on the rail network, we take a range of actions to address them.  If the risks are significant and urgent we may set conditions or stop operations, and in some cases take legal action under the Railways Act 2005.  When it’s appropriate we’ll issue a public statement, as the examples below show.

  • NZTA welcomes sentencing for 2023 Te Huia incident
  • NZTA prosecuting KiwiRail over June 2023 Te Huia incident
  • Te Huia passenger service prohibition order lifted

  • Waka Kotahi investigating Auckland train derailment
  • Rail regulator investigating collision

  • NZTA successfully prosecutes Daily Freight for runaway wagons
  • Transport Agency undertakes to implement TAIC Morningside recommendations
  • NZ Transport Agency welcomes TAIC report on train derailment
