SH67 Westport south and over the Buller Bridge

We’re proposing a lower speed limit on SH67 south of Westport to support the Alma Road area rezoning and relocation development. Traffic on this road includes people driving heavy vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, cars, and utes. The road environment is peri-urban, with footpaths on one side and increasing numbers of people are walking or cycling into town. Buller District Council is planning to build pedestrian and cycling facilities between Alma Road and Westport township, and a speed limit reduction will support this change in road environment. Lowering speeds is the most effective way to improve access for relocated Westport residents, reduce the severity of any crashes and make the area safer for everyone.

Key estimates:

  • Travel time: 12 seconds longer per trip for all vehicles
  • Safety: no expected change (no injury crashes recorded in the past 5 years)
  • Cost: $10,000.

SH67, SH67A Westport intersection – proposed speed limit change: 100km/h → 60km/h

For the reasons we're proposing to reduce SH67 above, a speed reduction is also proposed for a section of SH67A, back to the SH67 intersection, which serves both residents of Westport and visitors to popular Carters Beach and travelling along the West Coast.

Key estimates:

  • Travel time: 4 seconds longer per trip for all vehicles
  • Safety: 44% fewer injury crashes
  • Cost: $5,000.
