We’re improving the safety of State Highway 1 between Levin and Foxton by installing a new roundabout at the intersection with Waitārere Beach Road, stretches of painted wide centreline, roadside and median barriers, and new turnaround facilities.
We’re improving the safety of State Highway 1 (SH1) from Levin to Foxton while we work to deliver the new expressway from Ōtaki to north of Levin.
Once the new highway is complete, these safety improvements will keep people safe while they transition to a different driving environment.
To date, we have installed stretches of flexible median barrier south of Foxton and constructed turnaround facilities at three locations:
We’re building a new single-lane roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 1 (SH1) and Waitārere Beach Road.
The new roundabout is necessary to provide a safe connection to Waitārere Beach as the population of the region grows and traffic increases on SH1 and Waitārere Beach Road. The roundabout will also help create a smooth transition between the new Ōtaki to north of Levin expressway (once complete) and the existing highway.
Construction started in October 2025. The roundabout is due to be completed by November 2026.
Following the completion of the roundabout we intend to install a wide centreline between the two intersections of SH1 and Koputaroa Road (north) and Kawiu Road, and right turn bays into Poroutawhao School and Lewis Farms (subject to funding approval).
We are also planning to install a wide centreline on SH1 between Kawiu Road and Kopuatroa Road (south) and stretches of side barrier to prevent vehicles driving into roadside ditches (subject to funding approval).
We know these types of safety improvements are new for the area and have engaged our iwi and hapū partners, local government partners, key stakeholders, and the local community to get feedback and insights and to address any concerns about the infrastructure improvements. A summary of the feedback we received can be downloaded through the link below.
