Purpose

This note is to advise that the M12 Specification for the Design, Manufacture, Installation and Maintenance of Raised Pavement Markers and associated documents have been revised and updated.

The requirement to use the updated M12 suite of documents applies from the date of this note.

General information

The revision comprises the specification with supplementary documents as follows:

  • Performance field test requirements for raised pavement markers
  • Certificate and worksheet templates for raised pavement markers
  • Listing of raised pavement markers accepted for use in Waka Kotahi contracts.

This note also revokes three superseded documents which will be withdrawn from the Register, namely:

  • TNZ M12: 2018 Notes for the specification of raised pavement markers
  • TNZ P14: 1995 Specification for the installation of raised pavement markers
  • TNZ P14: 1995 Notes for the installation of raised pavement markers.

There is an interim approval period to allow for raised pavement markers to be tested for compliance with the updated standard, which will mean that there is only minor change in the meantime.  Project managers may choose to select to use the new specification in their existing projects from now on.

Reason for the change

The revision was completed to introduce new standards for retroreflectivity and category code naming following the publication of the Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1906.3: 2017.  Now that there is industry alignment, it is appropriate that the move is made to the new standard so that the industry is compliant.
