Otago speed limit reviews

We consulted on some state highway locations in Otago as part of proposals to set lower speed limits to better reflect the road environment and respond to community concerns. These include 2 high-risk rural intersections with SH1 Moeraki and 2 townships: SH1 Hampden, North Otago and SH8 Ettrick, Central Otago.

Proposed class exemption for 2026 Ford Ranger Super Duty to tow trailers weighing up to 4500kg

We asked for feedback on the proposed class exemption for the 2026 Ford Ranger Super Duty. People were asked if extra conditions should apply, to share any safety concerns, and to point out similar vehicles or issues.

Considering changes to light vehicle inspections

We’ve consulted on changes to light vehicle inspections - warrants of fitness (WoFs) and certificates of fitness (CoF A). This is part of the Government’s Land Transport Rules Reform Programme, alongside consultations on safety features for vehicles imported to New Zealand and heavy vehicle permitting.

Heavy Vehicle Productivity Phase 1

We’ve consulted on changes to rules for heavy vehicle drivers and operators. These aim to reduce administrative requirements for heavy vehicles and use resources more efficiently. This is part of the Government’s Land Transport Rules Reform Programme, alongside consultations on vehicle inspections and on safety features for vehicles imported to New Zealand.

Considering new safety features for vehicles imported into New Zealand

We’ve consulted to find out if additional safety features should be mandatory for vehicles imported into New Zealand. This is part of the Government’s Land Transport Rules Reform Programme, alongside consultations on vehicle inspections and heavy vehicle permitting.

Consultation on new light entry certification appointments

As part of our commitment to improve consistency, transparency, and safety across the certification process, we’ve recently reviewed our new light entry inspection and certification appointment process. As a result, we consulted on updating it to align to sections 2 and 6 of the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Standards Compliance 2002 (the Rule), and to align with appointment periods and performance reviews in other certification categories.

SH26A Morrinsville Road speed review

To support SH26A Morrinsville Road’s transfer to a local road, speed limits are under review. The proposal is to reduce speed limits from 80km/h to 50km/h from existing 80km/h sign to northeast of Silverdale Road and from there 80km/h to 70km/h to southwest of Ruakura roundabout.

SH6 Ellis Street/River Terrace Road Intersection Speed Zone consultation

We’re proposing to install an Intersection Speed Zone where State Highway 6 and Ellis Street in Brightwater meet. This would introduce a variable speed limit of 60km/h on the state highway that would operate when people use the intersection. At all other times, the speed limit would remain 80km/h.
