Hawke’s Bay/Gisborne roading update

|

SH2 south of Hastings has now opened, following assessment of the road between Waipukurau and Waipawa.

SH2 just north of the Ngaruroro River Bridge between Napier and Hastings, as at late this morning.

Cyclone Gabrielle has caused wide road spread closures around both Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne regions and a number of closures remain in place.

Update as of 1.30pm

SH35 between Hicks Bay and Gisborne CLOSED

SH2 between Ōpōtiki and Gisborne and then Gisborne to Napier CLOSED

SH2 between Napier and Hastings CLOSED

SH5 between Napier and Taupō CLOSED

SH51 between Napier and Clive CLOSED

SH51 between Napier Road and Elwood Road CLOSED

SH50 Expressway between Napier and Hastings CLOSED

SH50 between Takapau and Hastings CLOSED

Bridge engineers and roading crews are continuing to assess these road closures and in many cases waiting for floodwaters to recede.

“Please avoid all unnecessary travel at the moment and if you do have to drive in the areas which remain open, drive to the conditions, says Waka Kotahi’s System Manager for Hawke’s Bay/Gisborne Martin Colditz.

“Roading crews are still dealing with extensive flooding in places and hope to be able reassess the situation as soon as possible.

“We are mindful of the continued disruption caused by this cyclone, and we want to assure people everything is being done to safely open our network as quickly as possible.”
