A stretch of State Highway 2 between Wairoa and Gisborne will be closed for one night next week for asphalting works.
The stretch of road between Nicks Head Station Road and Maraenui Road will close between 8pm and 5am on Monday 11 March. The work will be complete and the road reopened at 5am the following day - Tuesday 12 March.
To minimise disruption during Monday night’s work, two nightly convoys will be in place to safely guide vehicles through the worksite in both directions.
Road users will be asked to be at both closure points by 10.30pm and 1.30am, and wait for the pilot vehicle to guide them through.
The convoys have previously taken place during asphalting works and the feedback from night-time road users has been positive.
Asphalting work will then move on Tuesday and Wednesday nights to nearby Tarewa. However a full closure is not needed for that work, and stop/go traffic lights will be operating with a pilot vehicle to guide motorists safely through the site. Road users should expect delays of up to 15 minutes at the site.
This work is important resurfacing work to improve the condition and resilience of the network post-Cyclone Gabrielle.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi acknowledges a number of sites have had closures and stop/go traffic management over the summer and we appreciate people’s support while this work takes place.
This overnight work remains weather dependent and NZTA advises all road users to regularly check our interactive Journey Planner for up to date, daily information. If the wet weather delays work at any stage, the road will be open that night. If the work is delayed, the following night, Tuesday, is reserved for the work.
