As part of the SH20 Maunkau Harbour Crossing project, the NZ Transport Agency will improve the drainage and stormwater quality around Mangere Bridge.  A stormwater treatment facility will be built around Onehunga Harbour Road to treat the water before it is released into the Manukau Harbour.

The SH20 northbound on-ramp at Onehunga will be closed from 7pm on Monday 5 January until 5am Friday 16 January 2009 to lay the new stormwater pipes.  This work will be completed during the holiday period to minimise disruption to motorists.

Onehunga Harbour Road will remain open to local two-way traffic up to the entrance to Onehunga Port.  Pedestrian and cycling access will not be affected by the closure.

Motorists wanting to get on the motorway at Onehunga to travel northbound should instead take the southbound motorway on-ramp, get off at Mahunga Drive, go across the Rimu Road overbridge and get back onto the motorway at the Rimu Road northbound on-ramp.

Additional work will also take place on SH20 to alter the lane layout and open up a new work area in the centre of the motorway.  As a result, the northbound motorway lanes on SH20 between Neilson Street and Hillsborough Road will be closed overnight for two nights on Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 January between 9pm and 5am.

Delays are possible so motorists are advised to leave extra time for their journey.  Advance warning signs will be in place to give early notice of the closure and detour routes will be clearly signposted.

"The NZ Transport Agency will take advantage of the quietest time of the year to progress work and lay a new pipe across the Neilson Street on-ramp, just north of the entrance to Onehunga Port.  This work will greatly improve drainage and stormwater quality in the local area," says NZTA acting regional manager Tommy Parker.

The project team has almost completed all piling work on the northern structure of the new Mangere Bridge, after drilling through approximately five metres of basalt, which is ten times stronger than concrete.

The NZ Transport Agency would like to thank motorists for their patience and co-operation during the work throughout the year.  For more information on the SH20 Manukau Harbour Crossing project, phone 0800 SH20 MHX (0800 7420 649) or visit www.nzta.govt.nz/manukauharbourcrossing(external link)
