Updates to S6 Bridges and other significant highway structures inspection policy and S8 Tunnels management and inspection policy

Publication details

The S6 Bridges and other significant highway structures inspection policy [PDF, 561 KB] sets out the requirements for the inspection of bridges and other significant highway structures on the state highway network including the structural aspects of tunnels.

The S8 Tunnels management and inspection policy sets out the main roles and responsibilities of the various parties involved in the delivery of safe and effective tunnel management on the state highway network and the requirements for the inspection of infrastructure used to manage and control the tunnels.

The inspection requirements for the structural aspects of tunnels have been moved from S8 to S6 to better align with how the inspection work is procured and undertaken.

In addition for S6:

  • The Bridge Inspection Engineer and Bridge Inspector have been retitled as the Structure Inspection Engineer and Structure Inspector respectively.
  • Pro forma routine surveillance inspection forms for bridges, retaining walls and large cantilever or gantry signs/signals have been added to appendix C.

In addition for S8:

  • The principle duties of the Tunnel Manager and the Safety Officer have been amended.
  • The roles of Regional Performance Manager and Operations Manager have been added and their principle duties defined.
  • The role of Tunnel Inspection Engineer (Structures) has been removed with all duties combined into that of the Structure Inspection Engineer defined in S6. The Tunnel Inspection Engineer (M&E) has been retitled as the Tunnel Inspection Engineer.
  • The roles and responsibilities of the Tunnel Inspection Engineer may be carried out by or delegated to others provided fully documentation of such changes is in place.
  • The requirements for the inspection of building elements of tunnels (eg doors, floors, and stairs) have been defined.
