Frontal impact compliance status of vehicles by vehicle make

These lists show the Class MA vehicles (passenger cars) by make and model that manufacturers have advised as meeting (or not meeting) New Zealand's frontal impact requirements. For completeness we have included some lists that were produced at the time frontal-impact legislation was being implemented in various countries, and some of these lists have not been updated since then.

Please note that the information on these lists is supplied by vehicle manufacturers, and is not exhaustive. The NZ Transport Agency has taken every reasonable precaution to ensure the accuracy of this information. Contact an entry certifier if you are in doubt about any of the information in these lists.

Recognising a frontal impact compliant Volkswagen vehicle

To determine frontal impact compliance for Class MA Volkswagen models, examine the vehicle identification number (VIN) following the instructions outlined below.

Class MA Volkswagen Passat, Golf, Bora, Vento, Polo, Sharan and Beetle manufactured in right-hand drive, produced for the global market(*)and has dual front airbags will comply with an approved frontal impact standard if they have a VIN that:

  • Starts with the letters WVW
    AND
  • Has a 10th character that is a V, W, X, Y, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5

* Great Britain, Japan, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, European Union, USA.
All other source markets require individual conformation of compliance.

For example, a vehicle with a VIN of WVW ###### V# ###### and meets with the above criteria, should be frontal impact compliant.


Warning: If there is any doubt that a vehicle meets the above criteria, contact the manufacturer’s representative prior to importation. Any variations on the VIN to the manufacturers identification of WVW, should be directed to the manufacturer’s representative for clarification.

*Note: The 10th character denotes the model year, as follows:
