The Capability Sessions: Learning Together programme is a series of global dialogues that aims to build capability and expand our horizons about how we think and practice. The sessions will motivate practitioners to keep learning, make new connections with peers, and adapt processes to respond better to new context, needs and desires.
In this session, CityThread's Kyle Wagenschutz and Sara Studdard discussed how to activate local support for projects through effective messaging, using examples from their Final Mile programme. The programme aimed to transform five US cities into great places to bike in record time by gathering public opinion data, and developing customised, targeted messaging to suit these objectives.
In this session, Demetrio covered the adaptive urbanism programmes the City of Milan has been implementing (Open Plazas, Open Streets, and School Streets), and how these have scaled over time. He also focused on the importance of bottom-up community support, key challenges they faced, and how these programmes are evolving.
In this session, Lucy Saunders explained the Healthy Streets approach and shared lessons from her experience working with Transport for London. Her presentation was followed by a presentation by Sam Bourne who discussed how the Healthy Streets approach can support good planning and urban design in New Zealand.

In this session, Jacob Wessel shared his experience enabling open streets programmes and transformation of streetscapes in Boston, US. The discussion focused on the challenges and opportunities faced by local government in the north-eastern United States and New Zealand when deploying plazas, parklets, pedestrian zones, and open streets.
