Wellington City Council introduced a fleet of bikes to motivate its people to make daily trips by bike.

Before the buy

Yellow fleet bikes

  • The snazzy new team

We purchased two yellow and two black bikes to match our corporate colours and branded them Absolutely Positively Wellington City Council. Our new bikes are unisex step through town bikes with the aforementioned features [stands, chain guards and pannier racks]. We also have pannier bags, helmets and locks.

  • Motives

We upgraded the fleet to make riding a bike an attractive option for staff which in turn reduces our emissions foot print, fleet costs and improves overall health of our company.

  • But has it worked?

We have seen a significant increase in short trips being made by bike . There are even a few staff who take regular lunch time rides along the waterfront.

  • Benefits of having fleet bikes at the workplace
    • Afternoons are so much more productive once we have been out for a bike and got some fresh air
    • Economical when going to meetings around Wellington. If there was a meeting at Freyberg Pool it would take longer to drive and park there rather than just biking along the waterfront
    • Social - in terms of our culture at work this has definitely helped as you get to know your work colleagues outside of the work environment
    • Swims at lunch time - instead of walking 20 minutes to get to Oriental Bay you can bike for 5 minutes so you get more time at the beach
    • We brought touch balls and frisbees with us so we can stop at a park and play with equipment before heading back to the office
