Project background

We want to avoid the growing pains of other cities by planning a step change in public transport now, so we can provide the services our growing city will need into the future. Turn-up-and-go/mass rapid transit (MRT) is a city-shaping project that will help transform our city's public transport network and urban form, while making a positive contribution to climate change, and making it easier to get to the people and places you love.

We are working closely with our Greater Christchurch partners on this project and a lot more information on our turn-up-and-go planning is hosted on their website.

  • Purpose

We are designing the turn-up-and-go/MRT service to support and encourage the changes our communities have asked for: a well-functioning and sustainable city that is easy, safe, resilient, healthy, and enjoyable to live in and move around, a city with more affordable housing and jobs and activities that can be accessed easily in central and suburban centres.

  • Engagement with the community

In early 2023, we asked the Greater Christchurch communities what they thought about the turn-up-and-go service.  We wanted to know if a turn-up-and-go/MRT system was the right thing to do in our city and if the route chosen was the most suitable route to start with.

You can find out what the community had to say about if a turn-up-and-go/MRT system at Huihui Mai.

Overall the feedback was positive and gave us the support we needed to keep planning.

  • Next steps
    • The next phase of the project is the Detailed Business Case (DBC). This will develop the design of the public transport service in more detail so that we have a better understanding of how the system will work, and how it will fit within the broader land use and transport network.
    • We are currently working with project partners to make funding submissions for this phase. If successful, the DBC phase will start in the second half of 2024.
    • We are continuing to work on the project by further developing the potential project staging, identifying options to help promote land use change, bringing together all the information we need for the DBC and starting to scope the DBC procurement.
