Our turn-up-and-go/mass rapid transit (MRT) investigation is about planning a step change in public transport now, so our growing city can provide the kind of services we will need into the future.
We want to avoid the growing pains of other cities by planning a step change in public transport now, so we can provide the services our growing city will need into the future. Turn-up-and-go/mass rapid transit (MRT) is a city-shaping project that will help transform our city's public transport network and urban form, while making a positive contribution to climate change, and making it easier to get to the people and places you love.
We are working closely with our Greater Christchurch partners on this project and a lot more information on our turn-up-and-go planning is hosted on their website.

Turn-up-and-go or MRT is a step up from conventional public transport – it’s a quicker, more frequent and reliable, higher-capacity service that operates on a permanent route (road or rail) and is largely separated from other traffic. It can move more people more quickly and reliably to where they want to go.
CloseWe are designing the turn-up-and-go/MRT service to support and encourage the changes our communities have asked for: a well-functioning and sustainable city that is easy, safe, resilient, healthy, and enjoyable to live in and move around, a city with more affordable housing and jobs and activities that can be accessed easily in central and suburban centres.
CloseIn early 2023, we asked the Greater Christchurch communities what they thought about the turn-up-and-go service. We wanted to know if a turn-up-and-go/MRT system was the right thing to do in our city and if the route chosen was the most suitable route to start with.
You can find out what the community had to say about if a turn-up-and-go/MRT system at Huihui Mai.

Overall the feedback was positive and gave us the support we needed to keep planning.
CloseTurn up and go/MRT is just one part of our work to improve public transport in and around Christchurch. You can find out more about plans to improve public transport on the Greater Christchurch, Environment Canterbury, Christchurch City Council and our websites.
